Chapter 5
The next morning, Desirae woke up from what felt like a long nap, even though she had probably slept for around eight hours, and slid out of bed. Quickly, she made her way to the bathroom. For the umpteenth time, she looked at her body in the mirror. However, this morning was the first morning that she knew she was having two babies instead of just one. She had begun to think of everything through different lenses since finding out.
“I’mma do it today,” Desirae said to herself. Last night, she had decided that she was going to call her father today. Since the divorce, she did not really see her father as much as she did when she was growing up. And she was happy for that. Desirae already knew that her father viewed her as being fast and a little too loose. He had said a couple of things to her over the years that let her know her father just did not know what kind of chick she was. Nonetheless, he was always there for her. And she could not deny that.
Desirae sat on her couch and called her father, knowing that even though he was from the streets, he was definitely more of a morning kind of person.
“Hello,” Desirae’s father, George, said. His voice was a little groggy.
“Hey, Daddy,” Desirae said. “It’s Desirae.”
Immediately, George woke up. He sounded as if he was leaning up in his bed. “Awe, hey, baby,” he said. “How you been?”
“I been good, Daddy,” Desirae answered. “I been good.” She looked down at her stomach. “How you been? What you been up to?”
“Awe, not too much,” George answered. “Just been working. Me and a couple buddies went to Chicago. Almost got caught up in some shit on the south side with these niggas outside of this restaurant, but we made it out. So, I can say that I had a little fun.” He laughed. “When you gon’ come up and see me? You supposed to, remember you told me that? Don’t go actin’ like you done forgot a nigga now.”
Desirae giggled. She did in fact remember promising her father that she was going to see him. She could not remember why she had been putting off. First, it seemed like she was talking to this guy, then that guy. Then, next thing she knew, she was involved with Tron – at the phone every time he called; fresh to meet when he walked through the door.
“I don’t know, Daddy,” Desirae answered. “I called, partly, cause I got something to tell you.”
“Awe, shit,” George said. “What is it? What you got to tell me?”
“Well,” Desirae said. It was so hard to not hesitate. She felt even more nervous telling her father than she did her mother. She knew that her father did not see her as a little angel. However, Desirae also knew that any man who had taken the time to be a father would probably not want his daughter to wind up getting pregnant by some nigga who don’t even want to acknowledge her.
